Do Your Desktop Backgrounds Look Stretched or Fuzzy

Desktop Background PositionMonitors come in many different shapes and sizes, so no single image resolution will look good on all systems.  But there are a couple things you can try if your desktop background looks stretched or fuzzy on your monitor.

Adjust Background Position

In Windows Vista or Windows 7, you can try the following.  Minimize any open windows and programs, and right click your desktop.  Click "Personalize".  Then in the Personalization window, click "Desktop Background".  The Desktop Background window will display your current background and all associated settings.  At the bottom of this window, you can select the "picture position".  Setting the position to "fill" or "center" will display the image at it's original aspect ratio (i.e. unstretched).

Change Your Screen Resolution

Many computer users don't have their screen resolution running at an optimal setting.  To improve the overall image quality of your screen, make sure you set your screen to the operating system "recommended" resolution.  Minimize those programs again (shortcut key - Windows Key + D), and right click your desktop.  In Windows Vista, click "Personalize", then "Display Settings".  In Windows 7, you can just click "Screen Resolution" from your desktop.  Generally, you want the highest resolution available.  In Vista, move the resolution slider all the way to the right.  In Windows 7, select the "recommended" resolution from the drop down box.  Click apply, and your new setting will be saved.

Set up a Windows 7 Desktop Background Slideshow

Windows 7 desktop slideshowWe all love Windows 7.  Or most of us do.  In any case, most people will agree that Windows 7 is a major improvement over previous versions of Windows.  The overhauled user interface and the new desktop customization features are some of the best things about the new OS.  Tech savvy folks have been poring over these new features for quite a while, but many casual users may not know of the cool ways you can customize your desktop in Windows 7.

One of my favorite new features is the ability to set a slide show of backgrounds to rotate on your desktop every couple minutes.  All you have to do is copy your favorite desktop backgrounds into one folder and tell Windows to use that folder for its desktop slide show.

Follow these steps -

1) Make sure you have all windows and programs minimized

You can hit Windows Key + D to minimize all windows and programs.  Or click the clear box at the far right of your Windows taskbar.

Create a New Windows 7 Library

Windows 7 LibrariesAmong the cool new features in Windows 7 is the ability to organize your folders into something called Libraries.  Most people do not store their files in just one folder, which is good for organizational purposes.  But using Libraries is a nice way to view your related files in one place.  In Windows 7, a library is a collection of folders and directories.  The actual location of the files and folders in a library does not matter.  You can include any folder from your computer and even folders from external drives.

So let's say you just downloaded a bunch of new desktop backgrounds.  Some of the backgrounds are nature images.  Some are landscapes.  You want to save those new images into categorized folders because you like to stay organized, but you want to be able to scroll through and view all of them at once.

Here are the steps to organize those new images into a library called "Desktop Backgrounds".
